Manu Tuilagi is set to be ruled out of the start of England’s Six Nations campaign due to a groin injury, Sale’s director of rugby, Alex Sanderson, has revealed.

Tuilagi pulled up in Sale’s home win over Saracens on 22 December and Sanderson predicted on Thursday the centre will be out for “five or six weeks” with a grade-three muscle tear. “He’s pulled his groin. He doesn’t need an operation,” Sanderson said. “We think he’s going to be back during the Six Nations, but not for the first week of it.”
