Before you start

A few things apply whichever site you choose. Only use operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. You’ll need to verify your age and identity before you can deposit, and gambling with credit cards isn’t allowed. Since January 2026, UKGC rules cap wagering requirements on bonuses at 10x, and offers can no longer mix sports and casino products. Most importantly, set a budget you can afford to lose before you place a bet, and treat betting as entertainment rather than a way to make money.

A learning path through our betting and casino resources

Our betting and casino resources cover a lot of ground, so here is a suggested order. Each step takes ten to twenty minutes. In addition, you can stop after any step and come back later.

  1. Learn how odds work. Start with sports betting basics or the betting odds video. Odds and implied probability are the foundation for everything else.
  2. Understand the house edge. Next, read bookmaker margin vs house edge. It explains why every bet and spin costs a little on average.
  3. See how offers work. Then watch the videos on how free bets work and wagering requirements. Both take under two minutes.
  4. Check the latest rules. After that, our summary of UK gambling rule changes shows what changed between 2024 and 2026.
  5. Compare real offers. Finally, put it into practice on the offers page, using the worked examples there.

Three betting and casino sums every new player should know

You do not need to be good at maths to bet sensibly. However, three quick sums will help you judge almost any offer or market.

Implied probability

To turn decimal odds into a chance, divide 1 by the odds. For example, odds of 4.0 imply a 25% chance. If you add up the chances for every outcome in a market, the total comes to more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker’s margin.

Free bet value

A free bet pays only its winnings. So a £10 free bet at 3.0 returns £20 if it wins, not £30. As a rough guide, a free bet is worth about half to three quarters of its face value.

Return to player

RTP is the share of stakes a slot pays back over the long run. On a 96% RTP slot, 100 spins at 10p (£10 in total) return about £9.60 on average. In the short run, though, results swing widely.

Remember: every one of these sums shows the house keeping an edge over time. That is why betting should be paid for from your entertainment budget.

Questions about our betting and casino resources

Where should I start if I know nothing about betting?

Start with betting basics. It covers licensing, ID checks and payments before any maths. After that, move on to the sports or casino guide.

Are your guides written for UK players?

Yes. They follow UK Gambling Commission rules, including the 10x wagering cap and the ban on mixed product offers. Rules in other countries can be very different.

Will your guides help me win?

No. Betting and casino games are designed so the operator comes out ahead over time. Instead, our guides explain how things work, so you can make informed choices and keep control of your spending.

How do I report something out of date?

Please use our contact page. Tell us which page it is and what has changed.

Using betting and casino resources on a first offer

Reading is one thing, but it helps to see the guides applied to a real decision. Say you are looking at a sports offer that asks for a £10 bet at evens and gives £30 in free bets.

First, the glossary tells you what “evens” and “stake not returned” mean. Next, the free bet sum above shows the £30 is worth roughly £14 to £21 on average, depending on the odds. Then the rule changes guide confirms the offer cannot include casino spins. Finally, betting basics reminds you to set a deposit limit before you place the bet.

The same routine works for a casino offer. In that case, swap the free bet sum for the RTP sum, and check the wagering terms against the 10x cap. As a result, you will know what an offer is worth before you hand over any money.
