If you used to see offers like “bet £10 on football, get 50 free spins”, you may have noticed they have disappeared. Since 19 January 2026, UK gambling operators cannot run mixed product promotions. This guide explains what the rule means, why the Gambling Commission brought it in and what it changes for players.
What are mixed product promotions?
Mixed product promotions are bonuses that require you to use two or more types of gambling to get the reward. Common examples included placing a sports bet to unlock casino free spins, or playing slots to earn a free bet. They were popular with bookmakers that run both a sportsbook and a casino under one account.
What the 2026 rule changed
The UK Gambling Commission confirmed the change for 19 January 2026. From that date, a promotion cannot require you to use more than one type of gambling, such as betting and slots. The same package of changes capped wagering requirements on bonuses at 10x.
The Commission said evidence links gambling on several products with a higher risk of harm. Cross-product offers also often came with complicated terms. You can read the full detail of the wagering cap in casinocompare’s guide to the UKGC wagering cap.
What it means for sports and casino players
- Sports offers stay sports-only: a sports welcome offer now rewards a sports bet with sports free bets.
- Casino offers stay casino-only: a casino offer rewards casino play with free spins or casino bonus funds.
- You choose the product: at bookmakers that run both, you pick the offer that matches how you want to play.
- Simpler terms: with one product per offer and wagering capped, it is easier to see what an offer is worth.
Can you still claim a sports and a casino offer?
That depends on the bookmaker. Some let new customers claim either a sports or a casino welcome offer, but not both; others treat them separately. The mixed product rule does not decide this, so check the terms of each offer. Our side-by-side comparison of sports and casino offers at the same bookmaker shows the estimated value and effort for each.
Spotting an older-style offer
Some offers may still ask you to bet on one product to unlock a reward on another. If you see one, read the terms carefully. Then check that the UK Gambling Commission really does license the site. These rules do not cover sites without a UK licence. That is one more reason to stick to UK licensed operators.
Mixed product promotions: key points
- UK licensed operators have not been able to run them since 19 January 2026.
- Offers must now reward the same type of gambling you used to qualify.
- The same changes cap wagering on UK bonuses at 10x.
- Whether you can claim both a sports and a casino offer depends on each bookmaker’s terms.
